checkmark Why does the Online Commons for a particular study close multiple months before data collection begins?

This window of time gives the Board of Overseers and the Principal Investigators time to review the proposals, deliberate about them and forge a final version of the questionnaire, after which the ANES staff work with the relevant survey firm to program, pretest, and field the questionnaire.

checkmark Can I submit a proposal revision outside of the proposal revision period?

No, once your proposal is posted it cannot be changed until the proposal revision period. This is for the convenience of readers, as it limits the number of times persons have to read each proposal. But you may post comments on your proposal indicating what changes you intend to make when the proposal revision period arrives. For more information, please see the OC How to Revise a Proposal document.

checkmark Why is there a comments-only period?

So that Registered Users of the Online Commons have a chance to read, consider, and comment on proposals that are posted late in the proposal submission period. We encourage you not to wait until the comments-only period to post comments on existing proposals, however, to maximize the time available for discussion.

checkmark Can I post comments during the proposal revision period?

No, this period is solely for authors to revise their proposals, which includes the consideration of comments made on their proposals during the comment period.
