Questions Asked in ANES Surveys

Questions asked in the traditional ANES time series (biennial surveys conducted 1948,1952, and since 1956) have been organized into searchable files by 'decade':

Variable 'numbers' (variable names) begin with the 2-digit year of the study in which the variable is included. Thus, for example, the question text identified for V480010 is the question text for this variable from the 1948 study.
Please note that questions outside of the traditional biennial time-series (pilot studies or special studies and special data collections) are not represented.

Please note the following when searching these files:

  • Question text is exactly as represented in the ASCII text variable documentation of the study codebook file. No searchable keywords have been added. Notes, codes and marginals are not included.
  • Exact wording of a question may vary somewhat across studies, so it is possible that a search for specific wording might exclude versions of the question where the wording differs. Exact matches to longer, rather than shorter, text might mean fewer matches.
  • For questions in the middle of a series or for multiple-mention responses, only the first variable in the set of variables may include complete text. Introductory text for an entire question series will appear before the first question.

Continuity Guide

The Continuity Guide tracks question usage by topic for the ANES time series for years 1948-1992. This reference has not been updated since the 1992 ANES but may have use for some research purposes.
