Study Design Highlights

The 1962 ANES is a traditional time series study, conducted face-to-face and constituting a representative national sample drawn using area probability sampling. It was conducted as part of the Survey Research Center Economic Behavior Program’s Fall Omnibus Survey, which was designed to measure consumer confidence and optimism but included questions in other areas such as political behavior and political attitudes. A questionnaire was used which served both the 1962 ANES and the Fall Omnibus. The 1962 ANES excludes questions from the questionnaire which were specifically gathered for the EBP survey alone.

An aspect of the design unique within the time series was the respondent selection process, which made use of the concept of ‘head of household’, a household member usually presumed to be male. In families with a married head of household, either the head or the wife of the head was randomly selected, with no selection for other eligible household members. In households where the head was unmarried, the male or, in this case, female head was assumed to be the respondent. Administration of the post-election interview began immediately after the November 6 elections, and continued until December 15. 1,297 completions were yielded from the sample.
